The old adage is, "It's more important to beat your friends than it is to beat your enemies," or "it's more important to beat your friends than to beat strangers." The meaning of either quote is that a person is always going to spend more time with friends and that means if a person loses to them there is more opportunity for them to remind you of the outcome whether it is intentional or not.
