Jeff Guiel, 30, has been selected to play for Canada's Olympic team. He is currently playing for Triple-A Syracuse, a farm team of the Toronto Blue Jays.
JEFF GUIEL
Guiel, whose older brother Aaron is an outfielder with the Kansas City Royals, played for OSU in 1996-97. Jeff was a first team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball and the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1997.
Despite a standout career for the Cowboys, Guiel was not drafted, but signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Angels. He played in the Angels' organization through 2003, spending his last 2 1-2 years at Triple-A Salt Lake. Guiel hit his 100th career pro homer late last season.
Guiel's best season was 2001 when he batted .313 for Double-A Arkansas in the first half and .321 for Salt Lake in the second half with a combined 23 homers and 71 RBIs.
Note: Former OSU second baseman Nebasset Brown, who was the subject of last weekµs OSU in the Pros segment, sustained a dislocated ankle injury on July 15 that resulted in season-ending surgery. Brown finished with a ..284 batting average in 22 games for Double-A El Paso.
