Recruiting: Palmer New QB Target?

Colton Palmer

Enter quarterback Colton Palmer of Kerrville (Tivy), Texas, on Oklahoma State's list of prospects. Palmer is an impressive young man that is an FCA leader in his school and lives his life by the examples set by his parents and by Jesus Christ. On the field in Tivy's spread offense we're not sure who he is using as an example but he is posting some knock-your-socks-off type numbers.

Tivy, a 4A school, is off this week but in week one they throttled San Antonio Roosevelt 49-28 as Palmer was 29-of-32 passing including 17 straight completions for 324 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for two touchdowns and caught a 55-yard pass for another score.

In week two Tivy was in a king-zize shootout with San Antonio Madison as Palmer hit on 19-of-36 passing for 271 yards and five touchdowns. He again ran for two more touchdowns. However, Madison sophomore running back Aaron Green rushed for 428 yards and nine touchdowns to pace the Mavericks to the win.

The 6-4, 200-pound Palmer has run a best 4.56 in the forty, has a bench press max of 275 pounds, a squat max of 355 pounds, and is very good academically with a 95 average in school and scored an 1100 on the SAT.

As far as the start to his season is concerned, he hasn't really thought about the numbers he's posted.

"I don't look at that," said Palmer. "I'm just concerned with our offense and how many points we've scored and how many yards we've gained. I'm just concerned that we keep playing good and do everything we can to win and put ourselves in position to make a run at the state championship."

He told me that SMU and Texas State had shown interest and that now he has heard from Oklahoma State and the Cowboys co-offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer.

"Not much," was his answer when asked what he knew about the newest school to show interest. "I know they run the spread offense very similar to what we run (at Tivy). I know their quarterback is a good athlete.

"I'm interested in finding out more but recruiting will have to wait because right now my focus is on my team and winning state. Recruiting will wait until after the season," Palmer said.

Palmer's mother was a track athlete at Texas, and his dad went to Texas A&M and is a defensive coach at Kerrville Tivy. He has an older brother that plays tight end for Texas Lutheran University, so Palmer comes from a very athletic family. He has a younger sister, Jillian, that is an eighth grader.

Palmer runs the hurdles in track and started out as a wide receiver in high school (starting as a freshman on the varsity) before making the switch to quarterback where he earned All-District honors last season, completing 191-of-273 passes for 2,365 yards and 27 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. He also ran for 705 yards and 13 more touchdowns as a junior.

Colton Palmer is a very interesting prospect that we think you'll be hearing more about.
