In what was a very confusing announcement on ESPN2 prior to an NCAA Super Regional softball telecast, we learned that regional baseball is coming back to Stillwater and Allie Reynolds Stadium. The Oklahoma State Cowboys will host a regional for the first time since 1997 when three teams (yet to be named) join them on Friday through Sunday, and a seventh game, if needed, on Monday, June 2.
The complete bracket will be announced live at 11:30 a.m. Monday (Central time) on ESPN.
All-session tickets for the event are $50 and can be purchased throughout the week. Single-game tickets can only be purchased on the day of the game. Those tickets are $10 for reserved seats and $8 for general admission seating (left field bleachers).
The OSU ticket office will be open on Memorial Day. Tickets can be purchased online at www.okstate.com or by calling 1-877-All-4-OSU (877-255-4678).
"It's a great honor, and it feels good that all our hard work has paid off," OSU shortstop Jordy Mercer said. "We're excited to bring a regional back to Stillwater for our fans, and it's going to be exciting to play in front of all that orange."
The 2008 regional will mark the first time OSU has hosted since 1997. The Cowboys have hosted nine previous regional tournaments at Reynolds Stadium. The facility opened in 1981 and has played host to 80 NCAA regional games.
Of the nine regionals hosted by the Cowboys at Reynolds Stadium, OSU has won six and finished second in the other three. The last regional championship OSU won on its home field came in 1993.
OSU is 42-16 on the season and ranked No. 6 nationally. The Cowboys are 26-4 on their home field this season and own a 719-148 (.829) mark in 26-plus seasons at Reynolds Stadium.
"I think we really deserved to host after everything we've gone through and done this season, with the way we played in the Big 12 and what we did against ranked teams," Cowboy senior pitcher Robbie Weinhardt said. "It's really going to be something big to pack Allie P. with our great fan base, and hopefully we can do well in front of our home crowd."
