Washington Is Glad To Be Back

While his teammates took for granted putting on the full pads for another spring practice on Wednesday, senior offensive lineman David Washington felt good with shoulder pads and everything else in place again. Washington broke his lower leg early last season at Troy and missed the rest of the season. The three-year starter at center said it was different.

"It was tough trying to get back out there," said Washington. "Working every day with Rob (Glass) and those guys, they do a good job of pushing you and getting you ready to go back. I had never really broke anything before and I was just trying to imagine coming back and playing again. How would it feel? Would I be the same player? I feel normal pretty much."

Head coach Mike Gundy said it was good to see Washington back out there fully cleared to bang around in the trenches, something he is pretty good at. Gundy knows that Washington may be banging around in the future lined up in a different position. Andrew Lewis did a good job at center in Washington's absence, and playing guard could be in the future for big number 63.

"I played tackle in high school and I played guard when I first got up here," said Washington. "Whatever he (Coach Wickline) wants me to do, I'll do. I just want to get back out there on the field."

A few weeks ago Washignton was up in the stands watching his high school alma mater (Guthrie HS) win the Class 5A state championship in basketball, and one of the starters for Guthrie was his little brother Jonathan Washington. David played hoops at Guthrie too. So who wins in the Washington driveway?

"I win, hands down," said the older Washington. "I taught him. No, I'm just kidding."

And can Washington still dunk the basketball like he did while playing for the Blue Jays? Washington said yes, and then backed off a little. "It's been a few years."

And a broken leg. I will guess that Washington probably ought to refrain from trying out that old basketball dunk.
