Quarterback Kody Spano of Stephenville, Texas, has been committed nearly as long as any prospect in the 2008 Oklahoma State recruiting class, but he said his official visit this weekend was still impressive ,and that he and fellow early commitment Adrian Richards of Mesquite, Texas were joined by others on a busy recruiting weekend in Stillwater.
"That was really cool," said Spano of the commitments made on Saturday night. "Coach Gundy called me and Adrian and Andrew (Mitchell) up. He is an offensive lineman from junior college that committed earlier on Saturday. Coach Gundy told everybody that we were committed and asked if anybody wanted to join us. One guy stood up and then three other guys said they wanted to commit. That was really cool."
Spano, one of the top-rated quarterbacks in a talented Texas class, led his team to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, but was hampered by a shoulder injury suffered late in the regular season.
"It's getting better," he said of the second degree separation. "I've got it rehabbed and it is getting better."
Spano, who is 6-3, 200 pounds and very mobile, said he was shown around over the weekend by current quarterback Zac Robinson. Spano added that he plans on majoring in architecture when he arrives in January as an early enrollee. It was architecture and a tour of the west end zone facility that got his attention on the trip.
"We toured the end zone and it really impressive how big everything is going to be," he said. "I loved it. It was awesome!"
Spano said he is now focused on getting ready to be a college student-athlete and will be ready to go in January.
