Hoops Recruiting: Cowboys Get 7-Footer
"I just think the kid had a terrific time on his visit to Oklahoma State. He can see himself fitting in culturally there, and really liked Coach (Sean) Sutton and the staff. I think you really have to give kudos to Kyle (Keller) for the way he handled the recruiting of Ibrahima," said Mike Mahoney, administrator of the Stoneridge Prep basketball program.
Thomas averaged 3.9 points and 2.7 rebounds in his first season at Stoneridge last year. But he spent much of the year backing up 6-11 Hamady N'diaye, who is now at Rutgers.
In September, Thomas scored 25 points as Stoneridge's team won the 14th annual Fullcourt Press Fall Hoops Classic's Gold Division with a 92-88 victory over Belmont Shore. Thomas hit five three-pointers in the championship game.
"He's got a real nice feel for the game," Mahoney says. "People who have seen him play love his enthusiasm. He's got a great, great personality, and enjoys playing the game, and is fun to be around."
Thomas visited OSU, Rutgers, Ball State, Fresno State and Auburn. As a matter of fact, he returned to California from Auburn on Monday, and then made his decision after consulting with Stoneridge officials.
"At the end of the day he just wants to play big-time basketball and Oklahoma State gives him that opportunity," Mahoney said.
Thomas will become the fourth high school players signed by the Cowboys in the early signing period. He joins James Anderson of Junction City, Ark., Martavius Adams of Wilkinson County (Irwinton), Ga., and Nick Sidorakis of Jenks, Okla.
OSU is still hoping to sign one more player in point guard Jai Lucas of Houston (Bellaire), Texas, before the early signing period comes to a close Wednesday.
