JamesOn Curry, the sophomore-to-be who is expected to be the Cowboys' leader on the basketball court this season, had exploratory surgery on his left knee Monday afternoon, OSU officials announced on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-3 guard is expected to be ready for preseason conditioning drills after 2-3 weeks of rehabilitation.

Curry, who averaged 9.4 points and 2.8 assists for the Cowboys in 2004-05, injured the knee earlier in the summer and then reaggravated it while attending the USA Basketball Men's Under-21 National Team Trials last month.

Curry was named to the Big 12 all-freshman team last season after starting in 15 of the Cowboys' final 16 games. He is the only returning starter from last season's Sweet 16 team which finished with a 26-7 record.

The announcement of Curry's surgery comes just a day after he was named one of the preseason top-50 candidates for the John R. Wooden Award.
