Former OSU All-Amer outfielder to play in Olympics
By
Barry Lewis
Posted Jul 20, 2004
Jeff Guiel, 30, has been selected to play for Canada's Olympic team. He is currently playing for Triple-A Syracuse, a farm team of the Toronto Blue Jays.
JEFF GUIEL
Guiel, whose older brother Aaron is an outfielder with the
Kansas City Royals
, played for OSU in 1996-97. Jeff was a first team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball and the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1997.
Despite a standout career for the Cowboys, Guiel was not drafted, but signed as a free agent with the
Anaheim Angels
. He played in the Angels' organization through 2003, spending his last 2 1-2 years at Triple-A Salt Lake. Guiel hit his 100th career pro homer late last season.
Guiel's best season was 2001 when he batted .313 for Double-A Arkansas in the first half and .321 for Salt Lake in the second half with a combined 23 homers and 71 RBIs.
Note: Former OSU second baseman Nebasset Brown, who was the subject of last weekµs OSU in the Pros segment, sustained a dislocated ankle injury on July 15 that resulted in season-ending surgery. Brown finished with a ..284 batting average in 22 games for Double-A El Paso.
