It's Official, Curry Signs With Cowboys
Posted May 6, 2004
North Carolina record setting scorer JamesOn Curry made it official on Wednesday night and signed an NCAA Letter of Intent with Oklahoma State. The letter was signed and faxed to the Oklahoma State basketball office around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Curry, who averaged 40.3 points per game this past season at Eastern Alamance High School, had his season end abruptly in February when he was convicted of two felony counts of selling marijuana to an undercover police officer at his school.
had signed originally with
last November, but because of the felony charge was released from his scholarship to the Tarheels by Carolina head coach Roy Williams. A holder of 14 high school records in North Carolina, the 6-3 Curry was given a second chance when he visited
this past weekend. Curry and his mother liked the environment at OSU, one in which troubled players such as senior guard
have flourished in. Sutton and the Cowboy players must have liked what they saw in Curry during the visit and Oklahoma State offered a scholarship. Curry said he liked the family atmosphere with the players at OSU.
The signing took place at the Curry home Wednesday evening with his mother, father, former high school coach, and a multitude of family members present. Curry will finish up his high school academics at an alternative school and then be eligible to enroll at Oklahoma State for the fall semester. It is expected that he will play a significant role for the team next season. He is an outstanding shooter that is more than capable of putting the ball on the floor and driving to the basket. Curry would have been a shoe in for the McDonald's All American Game and other all star events had it not been for his mistake and arrest. Curry was also hit on after the OSU visit by several schools including
, but made the decision to stick with Oklahoma State.
