Cowboys Fall 3-0 In Showdown With Texas

Friday night had been very good to Oklahoma State starting pitcher Jon Perrin the last three weeks as Perrin and the Pokes collected series opening wins over Texas Tech, West Virginia, and Kansas. Over 5,000 Texas fans watched Friday night and saw Perrin's fortunes reverse as Texas won 3-0 to take the opening game of a Big 12 Conference and old fashioned Oklahoma State vs. Texas showdown.

Perrin just did not have his good stuff that he's had the last three weeks. The Cowboys big righty out of Olathe, Kansas, had trouble spotting his variety of three pitches and while he only allowed four hits and one run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth inning, he walked six Longhorns and did not register a single strikeout in his 4.1 innings of work.

Perrin took the loss to go 5-3 on the season. Vince Wheeland threw the other 3.2 innings and gave up two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as third baseman Zane Gurwitz and designated hitter Jacob Felts each had singles that pushed across the runs.

Texas starter and game winner Parker French had his best outing in several weeks as he pitched six innings and allowed just one hit. French walked three and struck out a pair of Cowboys.

He was backed by some very solid defense. The Cowboys also had good defensive play, especially from shortstop Donnie Walton. The game was clean in that regard with no errors.

The Cowboys' offense struggled in the cavernous ballpark with just two hits, one from Walton and the other by third baseman Craig McConaughy.

The Cowboys fall to 11-5 in Big 12 play and 29-13 overall. Texas closes the gap as they are now 10-6 in conference and 32-11 overall. TCU, playing out of conference this weekend, is 10-5 in Big 12 play.

Oklahoma State and Texas do it again in game two of the series at 1 p.m. Saturday in Austin with the Cowboys expected to throw Tyler Buffet (2-1, 1.85 ERA) against Texas lefty Dillon Peters (5-3, 2.70 ERA).
