Cowboys Baseball Picked Second In Big 12

Josh Holliday

It might be a welcomed prediction that Josh Holliday and his Oklahoma State baseball squad was picked second in a poll of Big 12 baseball coaches released by the Big 12 Conference on Tuesday. The prediction might be welcomed because OSU teams have struggled some with being picked at the top this school and athletic year.

In football, Oklahoma State was picked first for the first time in history and lost in Bedlam on the last weekend to finish in a three-way tie for second. The men's basketball team was tabbed as a co-favorite with Kansas and is currently dealing with a three-game losing streak and two straight losses at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Now putting those selections in media polls around the neck or on the back of the baseball team isn't fair at all. But you don't have to as defending Big 12 champion Kansas State was picked to successfully defend their title.

It just so happens that Monday at the Cowboys media day for baseball that Holliday was asked about the strength of the Big 12 Conference this season.

"I think the Big 12 is good and I think it is going to bounce back from a year where it was perceived to be down with just three teams advancing to postseason," Holliday said.

"I know Texas's roster is strong and they will be right back at the top. TCU, a team that was under 500 last season, has a good roster and they will be at the top. You have to tip your cap to Kansas State because they return a number of players from the team that won the Big 12 a year ago. I wouldn't look past them at all. I think OU has a good squad.

"I think we will have our hands full and we won't look past anybody. Every time we suit up we will be ready and we want the competition because it will make us better. I think the league will be back and be one of the best in the country like it has been in the past."

For now the Cowboys biggest adversary is Mother Nature and getting in the necessary work before opening the season in Arlington, Texas on Feb. 14 against Incarnate Word, and then two other games that weekend including Texas-Arlington on Sunday.

"It's been a good camp to this point. We got a lot of work in, despite the weather being a little tricky at times. With the Smith Center and the indoor facilities we do have, we've been able to stay on point. I feel good about our team, and after our banquet Saturday night, I think the team feels real good about the energy and the excitement about a season that's right around the corner."
