OSU Arrives For Showdown With West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.V. - The big talk around the West Virginia University campus has to do with the change at quarterback to the third different player this season. Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen would just as soon have Ford Childress back for his third start even though he only completed 11 passes for 62 yards in last week's loss to Maryland but a torn pectoral muscle obviously prevents that.

Program insiders say Childress was the best quarterback running the offense during preseason camp and he is also at least right now the future. New starter Clint Trickett is a local hero that played high school football here when his dad was an assistant coach for the Mountaineers.

It's a tough deal to be coming off a blowout loss and lose your starting quarterback because this is a gut check game. Any time a team gets its tails handed to them there is that expectation of needing to make a statement. Honestly, that figures to be harder to get done with the change at quarterback.

That is not Oklahoma State's problem as the Cowboys have to deal with a first time experience of the Mountaineer atmosphere. Because of the near one hour and a half drive time from the Pittsburgh Airport to Milan Pushkar Stadium on the WVU campus head coach Mike Gundy chose to skip the stadium walk thru and head to the hotel in Washington, Pa., for the night.

The Cowboys had a good week of practice and coming off their open week may be as healthy as they've been since camp opened in August. Season starting offensive right tackle Daniel Koenig is with the team and may start Saturday.

One more thing, West Virginia is just as pretty as I'd been told. Lots of hills and you can tell when the trees fully change it is going to be really pretty around the campus and adjacent where the Monongahela River runs through town. The folks are friendly too. You can tell they appreciate being in the Big 12 Conference. Safe to say that in many ways Morgantown and WVU are very unique to the Big 12.
