Former Cowboys Make The Cut

The final NFL cuts have been made and Sunday will be the collection of players being signed back with teams to go on the practice squads. Here is what we know as of now.

First, the good news. If Oklahoma State Cowboy fans did not need further proof of how well offensive line coach Joe Wickline coaches up his players and prepares them to be really good on the offensive line, Lane Taylor, who signed with the team after not being drafted, has made the Packers 53-man roster. He is a player that can play multiple positions for the Pack and will be a valuable asset.

Also, late draftee Michael Bowie, a former Cowboy that because of failed drug tests for marijuana had to finish at Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla., has made the roster for the Seattle Seahawks. Bowie was tough to see go from OSU.

Those two offensive linemen now join Russell Okung, an All-Pro with Seattle; Charlie Johnson, a starter for the Minnesota Vikings in his ninth season, and multi-position utility lineman Corey Hilliard as offensive line products from OSU in the NFL.

Not long ago, prior to Joe Wickline, OSU had not produced any NFL offensive linemen since Paul Blair and Ron Baker.

I cannot believe that defensive end/linebacker Jamie Blatnick was cut by the Buffalo Bills after the preseason he had including a touchdown recovery of a bad snap for a touchdown. I do strongly believe that Buffalo or somebody else will scoop up Blatnick for a practice squad much like Denver did after cutting him at this time last season.

Super Bowl champion Billy Bajema is also out after being cut by the Baltimore Ravens. Bajema, who is a very smart man and has been a valuable team player in the NFL, may find this is his time to head to medical school or whatever he now plans with his life after football. He has had a very solid NFL career.

Defensive tackle Nigel Nicholas was among the last cuts for Tennessee, and linebacker Orie Lemon the same at Kansas City with the Chiefs. Lemon is close to being out of options as a practice squad player, but Nicholas might have a chance to get on the practice team somewhere.

In case you missed it last week, the Cincinnati Bengals must really like quarterback Zac Robinson as rather than come to an injury settlement on his sore passing elbow they chose to keep him on PUP (physically unable to perform) reserve list. He is still drawing a paycheck and is with the Bengals.

Finally, all kinds of talk filtering down to me that several teams including the Cleveland Browns are taking a hard look at kicker/punter Quinn Sharp, who was let go a week ago by the Cincinnati Bengals.
