Lowe Selected For Thorpe Watch List

After seeing defensive tackle Calvin Barnett, linebacker Shaun Lewis and cornerback/kick return specialist Justin Gilbert all get nominated this week to various preseason award watch lists it was good to see Oklahoma State senior safety Daytawion Lowe named to the Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list.

Barnett was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Award, and Outland Trophy lists. Justin Gilbert was named to the Paul Hornung Award and the Bronko Nagurski Award lists. Shaun Lewis was named to the Bronko Nagurski Award list.

But the senior safety out of Midwest City Carl Albert who has often been the backbone for the Cowboys in the secondary had not made a list until the Jim Thorpe Award list was announced Friday.

Given a choice, that would likely be the award that Lowe would most like to win. It is the award named for an athlete from his home state and an award that was born in Oklahoma.

Last season Lowe tied for the team lead with 75 tackles with two interceptions. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown against Purdue in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Lowe has started 26 consecutive games for the Cowboys and leads the team in total tackles since 2011. In his OSU career he has 182 tackles with three sacks, three interceptions, four fumbles caused, and two fumbles recovered, including the touchdown in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Lowe is a good student majoring in education and he is active in FCA. He is also a Cowboys' Cowboy as he has been raising and riding horses since he was a young boy. He is a very accomplished rider.

The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 12 on ESPN. The Jim Thorpe Award Banquet will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014 in Oklahoma City.
