Wort becomes third Sooner to declare

NORMAN, Okla. — Well, this one is a bit of a surprise: Sooner linebacker Tom Wort will become the third underclassman to enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot, 237-pounder from New Braunsfels, Texas, has elected to forgo his final season at OU and join free safety Tony Jefferson and wide receiver Kenny Stills as Sooners aiming for a draft and spot at the next level.

Wort has widely thought to have been unhappy after the coaching change that sent defensive coordinator Brent Venables to Clemson and Tim Kish in to coach linebackers, with new and returning defensive coordinator Mike Stoops back to OU.

Schematically OU went to more of a secondary based defense, leaving the linebackers with less of an impact.

Still, most expected if he would not return for his senior season as a Sooner that he would transfer elsewhere—perhaps to rejoin Venables at Clemson—because he could graduate and in a sense become a free agent of sorts, provided his select school had a graduate program for him.

But Wort has went the other route, leaving college football all together.

He finishes his OU career with 190 tackles, including 17.5 for loss and 10 sacks.

Now, the only remaining piece up for question is cornerback Aaron Colvin, who is expected to announce his return to OU but could sway the other way.

At most, the Sooners are set to have just three starters back from their 2012 defense.
