Jayhawks Win Ugly In Final Tune Up

The beauty of early season basketball games is that they can provide a number of teaching moments for a coach. Kansas coach Bill Self will have that, as the Jayhawks defeated Washburn 62-50 Monday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

The beauty of early season basketball games is that they can provide a number of teaching moments for a coach. Kansas coach Bill Self will have that, as the Jayhawks defeated Washburn 62-50 Monday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

The game was a sloppy one throughout, as Kansas committed 24 turnovers and shot just 44% on 20 of 46 shooting, while struggling on the boards, only out rebounding the smaller Ichabods by one at 40-39. The Jayhawks defense were its only constant on the night.

"We actually guarded them well," Self said. "We held Washburn to 50. We did a good job defensively. Our offense stunk. It was just beyond bad."

Kansas fell behind early, trailing the Ichabods by as many as five in the first half, before a 31-11 run swung momentum in the Jayhawks' favor. Redshirt freshman guard Ben McLemore led the team in scoring and rebounds with 17 points and 10 boards.

Two others tallied in double figures, including senior guard Elijah Johnson, who scored 13 and true freshman forward Perry Ellis, who scored 10 and hauled in five rebounds.

After the game, Self acknowledge the positives from a teaching standpoint that come with a game like this.

"I told our team there's going to be some nights this season when you don't play good, but you can still win, if you defend and rebound," Self said.

Kansas will prepare to open the regular season Friday, when they host Southeast Missouri State in The Opening round of the CBE classic.
