Samples opened up the scoring for Dallas Skyline in that important District 9-5A contest in which both teams were 1-0 in district play. Samples caught a 20-yard post route for The Opening score after catching a couple of key passes during the drive.
The 6-0, 175-pound Samples has excellent body control and lots of speed to go with it. He showed that body control on the second touchdown catch as came back to a pass thrown under desparation by Devante Kincade. Samples caught the ball with two defenders on his back, ducked under the defenders to get away and then beat another Wildcat defender to the goal line.
"I just saw Devante scrambling and I came back to him because I knew he would be looking for me," Samples said. "I knew the cornerback was going to be going for it so I protected the ball, so I just ducked under him and then got into the end zone."
Samples finished Skyline's 42-6 victory with five catches for 72 yards and the two touchdowns. He nearly had a third scoring reception but a fade pass was thrown just out of bounds.
"My season is going good and I'm feeling stronger and stronger every day, healing more and more and I'm playing good," Samples explained bringing up his spring injury that he worked hard to rehab and get ready for the start of the season.
He is looking to focus on working toward a state championship as he got his recruiting out of the way with the early commitment to the Cowboys.
"It just felt so much at home, " said Samples. "Coach (Mike) Gundy made me feel so at home. He called my mom. He made my family feel welcome. When I went down there the atmosphere was crazy. They throw the ball a lot and that just fits me perfectly."
Samples is popular everywhere he goes as after the game the Lake Highlands cheerleaders and even some of their fans wanted to take pictures with him.
But he is not the only receiver prospect in the Metroplex that is on a tear. He has 23 catches for 433 yards and 10 touchdowns through the first five games of the season. But Marcell Ateman, also an OSU commitment, at Wylie East has 36 receptions for 662 yards and 10 touchdowns.
"Marcell and I bet, and whoever has the most touchdowns at the end of the season gets their choice on bedrooms (once we move to OSU)," Samples said laughing. "I think I'm beating him right now, but don't tell him I said that."
We don't have to as both receivers are keeping up with each other in that very important touchdown department (where they are actually tied with 10 apiece).
At the time of our interview right after his game, Samples did not know that Ateman had caught four touchdowns in Wylie East's win over rival Wylie. This will be a battle well worth watching the next several months.
In the next issue of Go Pokes Magazine, subscribers will be able to read a feature story that will involve Ra'Shaad Samples. The magazine will feature an article on the Oklahoma State staff recruiting the sons of coaches, and Samples is included in that story. Last Friday night at Lake Highlands, the Skyline High School senior showed his talent at wide receiver.
