Smart Set To Compete In McDonald's Event

Posted Mar 27, 2012

For Cowboy basketball fans who want an early glimpse at a better future, Wednesday night is as good a place to start as any. Future Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart will compete in the McDonald’s All-American game at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Chicago. The game is going to be televised by ESPN.

Smart concluded his senior season at Flower Mound Marcus High School with his second consecutive Texas 5A state title earlier this month with a 56-52 victory over South Bend Travis on March 11.

Teammate and future Cowboy Phil Forte was the MVP of the championship game after pouring in 24 points and hitting 4-of-6 from 3-point range, as well as, 8-for-8 from the foul line.

Smart had 15 points to go with eight boards and five assists in the victory in his typical well-rounded, team-first style.

Smart will be the second consecutive future Cowboy to compete in the event. OSU’s co-Big 12 freshman of the year Le’Bryan Nash participated in 2011. Smart is the fifth Cowboy signee in the past five years to be selected to participate in the event.

Playing in the McDonald’s All-American game is the second major honor in the past week for Smart, who was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Texas on Thursday.

Smart averaged 15.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 5 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.3 blocks per game in leading Marcus to a 39-2 record in his senior campaign. He was also named the 2011 Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 5A Player of the Year.

The Flower Mound Marcus senior is also a finalist for the 2012 Morgan Wootten Player of the Year award, which is presented to the best male and female McDonald's All-American players for their exemplification of outstanding character, exhibit leadership, and embody the values of being a student athlete in the classroom and the community.
