GoPokes.com is interviewing the coach for each of the Oklahoma State commitments in the days leading up to National Signing Day. In this installment of “His Coach’s Take,” we visit with former Richland High School head coach Gene Wier about Jeremiah Tshimanga, a 6-2, 225-pound linebacker who had 84 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 3 sacks as a senior.

What are Jeremiah’s strengths as a football player?
Gene Wier: Well, he’s a very physical player. He can make some really big collisions. He’s fast and strong. He’s what I called a Mike linebacker-type of guy or maybe a defensive end. He has very good straight ahead speed, and he has a passion to play. A lot of people really don’t have that.

What do you think will be the biggest transition for him moving from the high school game to the Big 12 Conference?
Gene Wier: That’s pretty standard for everybody, and that’s the speed of the game. I think he’ll be fine from the physical standpoint because he’s a very physical boy and he’s very mature for his age. So, the speed of the game and I don’t know about the complexity of it but learning what they want him to do.

Do you think he has a chance to make an instant impact or will there be an adjustment period for him?
Gene Wier: I think personally it’s always better that they get a year to redshirt, unless they’re a receiver or something like that. But I’d like to see him redshirt. But he’s got a huge advantage coming in at the semester, so that’s almost a redshirt year.

Why do you think he chose Oklahoma State?
Gene Wier: I think there are several reasons. I think he was ready to move on (to college). We have a linebacker up there who played with us the year before in Nico Ornelas and they are friends. I just think he was ready to go.

What do you think he is capable of accomplishing over the course of his college career at OSU?
Gene Wier: I think he’s capable of quite a bit and I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t make the next level (to play in the NFL). He’s very mature and goal oriented. He will work out, and he will make his grades ... he will do those things expected of him. He has a passion to go on to play again (in the NFL).

What will you remember the most about coaching Jeremiah?
Gene Wier: That he’s a kind person, (and) very thoughtful of others.
