GoPokes.com is interviewing the coach for each of the Oklahoma State commitments in the days leading up to next week's National Signing Day. In this installment of “His Coach’s Take,” we visit with Chip Killian, the head coach at Pflugerville (Texas) Hendrickson High School, about Victor Irokansi, a 6-4, 230-pound defensive end who earned first-team All-District honors as a senior.

What are Victor’s strengths as a football player?

“I think it’s his intensity and how physical he plays. His motor runs extremely hot; he’s going to be a very disruptive force as a defensive player to any kind of offense, whether it’s run-based or a pass-based offense.”

What do you think will be the biggest transition for him moving from the high school game to the Big 12 Conference?

Chip Killian: “It will be a little bit of a speed issue. He’s going to have to get used to the speed of the offensive lines more than anything else. We play some pretty good sized lines down here in the district and playoff region that we’re in but it’s the speed that will be the toughest thing for him to adjust to.”

Do you think he has a chance to make an instant impact or will there be an adjustment period for him?

Chip Killian: “I don’t know exactly what Oklahoma State’s depth is at the position but I think if there is somebody who is ready to be a situational player as a true freshman, Victor could definitely rise to that occasion.”

Why do you think he chose Oklahoma State?

Chip Killian: “I think the facilities and Oklahoma State was interested in him early on and showed him quite a bit of attention from the start. He just got back from his official visit and really enjoyed everything up there. he enjoyed the players and the coaches and, obviously, the facilities up there are outstanding. Plus, what are they, one game away from playing for the national championship? There are a lot of reasons to like Oklahoma State.”

What do you think he is capable of accomplishing over the course of his college career at OSU?

Chip Killian: “Pretty much anything he wants to. He’s an extremely focused young man and even since I’ve known him. When he was in seventh grade he came up to me as the high school coach and said, ‘I’m going to start as a sophomore, I’m going to earn a college scholarship and my plan is to play professional football and get into coaching.’ So he’s pretty much right on target. He started as a sophomore and now he has his college scholarship in the Big 12 Conference, where he’s always wanted to play. The next step is right in front of him.”

What will you remember the most about coaching him?

Chip Killian: “The thing about Victor I probably like more than anything else is that he came to play every day. It didn’t matter if it was practice or a game, he would always do his best. His motor just runs so hot, as I said. He enjoys playing the game so much and so hard that it draws your attention and appreciation.”
