On Sunday, Lewis made the trip to Stillwater to attended the Cowboys' final one-day minicamp. By early Monday morning everybody's plan, Lewis and apparently Oklahoma State's came together and Lewis was a verbal commitment to Oklahoma State.
"I was at the camp on Sunday and I thought that I did well," said Lewis. "It all didn't happen until after I left and then it really kind of all came up this morning.
"I called Coach (Joe) Wickline and he was filling me in on the offensive line and all the things he was thinking and explaining to me everything he thought about how I played and then at the end he tells me he is offering me a scholarship. Then I talk to Coach Defo (Joe DeForest) and he asks me if I want to be a Cowboy. I said, yes."
Lewis was one of the most agile linemen in attendance and his times and performance on the 5-10-5 and L-drill was among the best of the linemen. He was also solid on the 20-yard sprints that the big guys ran for Wickline and company.
"He told me that we would have to wait until I got up there next year and see how I developed and that would decide where I was going to play," said the 6-2 1/2, 282-pound Lewis.
"This season at North Shore I think Coach Aymond is going to have me playing at center. We get started with practice next Monday on Aug. 8."
Lewis said his knee has been doing fine, although as a precautionary measure he wore a brace during the workout at the Oklahoma State minicamp and intends to wear a brace this season.
The injury was just an ACL and was reconstructed by Houston orthopedic surgeon Dr. Walt Lowe, who is the preferred orthopedic surgeon of the NFL's Houston Texans and the NBA's Houston Rockets.
This young man is pretty sharp in the classroom as well. He has a 3.5 GPA and has already taken both the SAT and ACT tests.
"I plan on majoring in Biochemistry," Lewis said when asked. "I really like the family atmosphere at Oklahoma State. It is a comfortable place and I like the coaches and the way they relate to the players. I could just tell it is a place that I would like to be and that is why I was so eager to get a scholarship offer and commit to the Cowboys."
Lewis's only other known scholarship offer was from Air Force, but he had recruiting interest from Houston, TCU, Rice, Texas, and Texas Tech.
Lewis is the ninth known commitment in recruiting for the Cowboys in the 2012 class.
