Ornelas was driving home with his mother, brother and his brother’s friend when asked about his visit, and his response was rather shocking.
“Horrible,” he said, before adding, “I’m just kidding. It was awesome.”
What made it so awesome? “First off, it’s Oklahoma State, so that’s the first reason right there. I got to meet my host, everybody else’s host, and then I got to meet a lot of the recruits that I didn’t know, although most of us already knew each other ... but I got to meet the new ones, and that was pretty cool.”
His host during the weekend was current Cowboy safety Zack Craig, the freshman this past season from Spring Branch, Texas. The two had never meet in person prior to this weekend but had been corresponding via Facebook. “He sent me what he did before he went to Oklahoma State to gain weight,” said Ornelas.
Ornelas has made several trips to Oklahoma State, so he was not surprised by the Cowboys locker room facilities but a few of the other visitors were impressed.
“There were a couple of guys who had already committed but they hadn’t seen the facilities, and they were just blown away, and that made it even better,” he said.
Ornelas actually arrived earlier than most of the weekend’s other visitors. He and Josh Stewart, the standout wide receiver from Denton Guyer, drove up Friday afternoon to spend some time with early enrollees J.W. Walsh and Travis Cross before the recruiting weekend actually began Saturday morning.
“They’re still getting used to it,” Ornelas said of Walsh and Cross, the two high school seniors who graduated early and enrolled at OSU for the spring semester. “They’re not used to nobody knowing who they are, and they’re trying to get used to that.”
He enjoyed seeing many of the Cowboys recruits again, and meeting some of the incoming players for the first time.
“We all talked about what we were going to do when we get here. When we’re coming in the summer, who we’re going to be rooming with and trying to get that all figured out,” said Ornelas. “If it’s four (of us in an apartment), it’s going to be me, J.W., David (Glidden) and Josh (Stewart). But if it’s just two, it’s going to be me and David.”
