Walsh Talks About U.S. Army Honor

J.W. Walsh

We were hesitant to bother quarterback J.W. Walsh of Denton (Guyer), Texas, as we know the Oklahoma State 2011 commitment at quarterback is not huge on talking individual honors and we knew he would be focused in on an important District 7-5A contest coming up Friday with Keller Central.

Keller is 4-1 and Guyer is 3-2 on the season and this game looms as an important contest, but Tuesday was the official press conference confirming Walsh as a particpant in the U.S. Army All-American Game this upcoming January in The Alamodone in San Antonio, Texas.

Walsh will join future Oklahoma State teammate and Abilene running back Herschel Sims in the game.

Walsh confirmed that he knew about the selection this summer but it was still a special day at school with the press conference and the photos being taken of him wearing the game jersey.

"This is a reflection of what my team and I have been able to accomplish over the past several seasons," said Walsh.

"This is a credit to those graduated seniors and the up and coming underclassmen that have all formed a great team and given me the opportunity to have success as their teammate. I am just glad they allowed me the opportunity to play quarterback with them and helped the team and myself have the success that we have experienced."

Walsh is definitely a team player, but he does stand out with what he is able to accomplish. This season in the Kirk Herbstreit Showcase game, a 43-42 loss to Cedar Hill at Cowboys Stadium, Walsh had 184 rushing yards and five touchdowns and also threw for 158 yards and a touchdown in the contest.

Last season, the 6-3, 200-pound Walsh directed a strong Guyer team that went deep into the playoffs. Walsh was a unanimous selection for District 5-4A quarterback after his junior season. He passed for 1,764 yards and 21 touchdowns while completing 65 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 1,048 yards and 18 more touchdowns.

Walsh committed to Oklahoma State last winter over strong interest from Texas and a number of other schools. Walsh has been strong in his pledge and has been active in communicating with other Oklahoma State commitments and recruiting other players to OSU.
